    SHOW NOTES...

    1 Above average intelligence

In the aggregate, people with Asperger's Syndrome tend to be a bit smarter than neuro-typicals. That's not to say that every Aspie is a genius, but when compared to others, we're smarter as a group.

    2 Poor social interactions

Our inability to function a full speed socially also sets us apart.

Aspies may want to be socially accepted, but we find "the group" (or troupe) either pushes us aside or abandons us. One Aspie told how that when he would sit down at a school lunch table, the other students would get up and leave him alone.

Some Aspies prefer to be alone. They don't like the noise, confusion, and anxiety found in social settings. What's more, they find socializing a waste of time.

    3 Special interest

While everyone has special interests, Aspies tend to lay hold of an area of interest to the point of being obsessed.

That makes some Aspies experts in some things. But they often fail to understand that others don't share their interests.

    4 Odd speech patterns

It seems that some Aspies can't think and talk at the same time. What's more, some Aspies find the anxiety of small talk makes constructing simple sentences cumbersome. And so, we often stumble over words.

We come across to neuro-typical people as being "special."

    5 Flat effect

Aspies tend to think better than they communicate. Not only do they find words cumbersome, but their facial expressions are also often blank (called 'flat effect') and their body language betrays their self-consciousness.

    6 Lack of coordination

Some Aspies are great athletes. But it seems that most struggle. They lack strength and coordination that gets them chosen last in gym class.
