    SHOW NOTES
Some presume that Asperger's Syndrome must be obvious. If it's not readily apparent, they assume, it must not really exist.

The problem arises due to non-Autistic individuals evaluating those suspected of being Aspies. Those doing the evaluation have no point of reference in the form of personally having experienced autism. So how do they know what to look for?

Their criteria are comprised of Autistic people they have diagnosed and from the body of literature, they have encountered. While both are valid and useful, they still fall short of being complete. Consequently, some fall between the cracks, so to speak.

Asperger's Syndrome is broadly comprised of two bodies of behavior. First, is behavior deficits — things we don't do (or ways we don't think) that are normal among neuro-typical people. Second, is behavior surfeits — things we do (or ways we think) uncommon among neuro-typical people.

    1. Tidy

You prefer that your belongings be organized

    2. Schedules

You tend to organize your life in routines and schedule specific times to do specific things.

    3. Prefer a structured environment.

The military, for example, may be bothersome due to the mandated social interaction, but its structure suits them fine. You prefer assigned seating at school, on airplanes, etc.

    4. You don't care for surprises

You may appreciate surprise birthday parties, but when Aunt Matilda unexpectedly shows up at your front door, you're a bit nonplussed. Unforeseen minor disasters such as a leaky roof, clogged plumbing, or dog doing his business on the sofa would annoy anyone, but Aspies may be particularly stressed.

    5. Bad with hair and clothing choices

While Aspergians appreciate tidy environments, personal appearance is the exception. This may be due to the fact that we can see ourselves so we are not bothered by the mussy appearance, the fact the social protocols are foreign to us, or the discomfort of certain textiles and hair clippings. Or a combination of the above.

    6. You don't get jokes

    7. You prefer texting and emails over phone calls.

    8. Others inexplicably become angry with you.

    9. You overthink (called ruminating)

    10. You are fond of nature's soothing sites and sounds such as rolling ocean tide or summer breeze rustling leaves in the woods. Thunderstorms leave your nerves frayed.

    11. You're detail-oriented

    12. You readily see a better way of doing things; more efficient and effective.

    13. Others won't listen to you when you tell them better ways of doing things, and you don't understand why.

    14. You're viewed as a loner and ofttimes find that hurtful.

    15. You display affective empathy for those you sense are lonely.
