Uniquely American, Uniquely Ugly: Ruger's New Pistol
Some guns, the best actually, are born from a single mind... a single vision. They're not watered down and they're focused in design principle. John Moses Browning's weapons are like that. So is Gaston Glock's handgun, still copied by manufacturer's. Then you have "committee pistols" whose design emerges a bit confused and perplexing. These guns try to be all things to all people and in all the "poll taking" and changing, the important things like weight and size are amazingly abandoned.
Ruger sought consultation from different quarters, massaged the design, and here's the result: a 31 oz polymer frame, thick, bulky, and ugly pistol. Sure it's reliable and accurate (shown) but so are the many other value pistols in the market. It's looks are subjective for sure but you won't see the RAP in movies any time soon. A cool looking movie pistol it is not (with big flat rear shelf at the rear; no doubt mandated by committee input).
Perhaps the Ruger American Pistol sells amazingly but I doubt it. The market is full of better options. Spend a little more and get a Glock 17, XDM, Sig P320, M&P9, Walther PPQ, CZ P09, or Canik TP9... or even the much slimmer and lighter stablemate Ruger SR9. In the end I predict the RAP will settle into obscurity, like the Ruger Gunsite Scout, sitting unwanted on dealer shelves. However if all things Ruger attract you and you don't care about weight, your dream gun has arrived.
