In early 2017 a shabby-looking man shuffled around the motorbike showrooms of the Khai Bang Rachan district of Sing Buri in central Thailand. No one would take him seriously, however; in fact, some salespeople refused to serve the eccentric-seeming individual at all. So when one store assistant actually showed him some kindness and respect, the elderly gentleman showed him something incredible in return.

Lung Decha, the odd customer in question, is resident in Sing Buri province. The mysterious character has worked hard all his life as a mechanic and is now semi-retired. Moreover, according to an online post by his sister, “Uncle Deja” is an honest guy who doesn’t smoke, drink or gamble.

However, his clean-cut lifestyle was seemingly at odds with his appearance on the day that he went shopping for a motorbike. Decha seemingly had little interest in fancy clothes and shoes and – at that time, at least – had chosen to wear comfortable, loose-fitting items instead. His laid-back look was accompanied by long, grown-out hair and a gray beard.

The fact that Decha was perusing the motorcycle emporiums in a dirty, ill-fitting T-shirt, threadbare pants and a pair of flip-flops should be neither here nor there. But a brand new motorbike is a high-end item, and so perhaps the old Thai guy faced some prejudice about whether he could afford such a purchase simply because of the way he was dressed.
