The history of Kensington’s busy drug market spans back to the beginning of speed sales in the 1970s, years after factories left the city and took jobs with them. People sold drugs in abandoned buildings out of sight of police.

In the 80s and 90s, crack cocaine and other opioids became available in Kensington. People experiencing addiction to painkillers came for cheaper opioids, which were often adulterated or “cut” with other chemicals and substances that could be deadly.
