Violent clashes between protesters and riot police broke out in the Peruvian capital of Lima on Tuesday.

Thousands took to the streets to protest the appointment of interim leader Manuel Merino after the impeachment of President Martin Vizcarra.

The departure of Vizcarra, who enjoys widespread support among voters, was met with anger on the streets with protesters calling the dismissal a "coup in disguise”.

Impeachment proceedings were brought forward following historic allegations of financial impropriety by the Peruvian president.

Demonstrators flooded the Presidential palace and government buildings but were met with force by law enforcement.
