The Jesuits were the first Spanish Priests into many regions of New Spain. They were very educated and powerful. When the Jesuits were expelled by the King of Spain in 1767 they had been running the remote outposts of the West for 200 years. They were engaged in running the missions, mining, raising livestock and presching to the natives. They had many wealthy mines and gold and silver caches. When the Spanish soldiers arrived to take them to Mexico to answer for charges, their wealth was no where to be found. I have found evidence that they used secret messages in some carefully constructed petroglyph panels to keep the hiding places of their gold and silver secure.
