I rescued this old Dragonfly a few months ago. She was missing a some parts, like the rotor blades and the skids.

After many hours of 3d design and trial and error printing on the skids we finally have her put back together. The most difficult part was getting the distances recreated for the snap fit to work just like the original toy had.

I did slice the skids into 4 different parts so that it would be easier to print a relatively clean piece. I also pre-drilled 3mm holes to help index the parts so that they would assemble easily together. At the end of the day I just used some superglue to fuse the skids from 4 parts into 1, but the entire assembly is press fit just like the original.

The designs were pulled directly from the original blueprints and each layer of plastic was nearly perfectly sculpted, in electrons, to match the original. I didn't have the original parts, just the original blueprints, so it may not be an exact copy. However, it is a superior copy to the original because the details are a lot more crisp. This is probably closer to the original sculpts...

It was a ton of fun to make. Now if I can just get the nerve to crack open one of these, I can reverse engineer it and make a Dragonfly for the 6 inch line...
