Cuomo has gone from ‘pandemic hero’ to on the cusp of losing his job

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has experienced an “extraordinary turnaround” as within only a year he has gone from the “hero of the pandemic” to his career being on the line, according to Sky News Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielsen.

The New York governor is facing dual crises at the moment as he battles through claims of sexual harassment by former staffers, and continues to face heat for his controversial nursing home directive.

Mr Cuomo ordered COVID-19 positive patients back into nursing homes, and then failed to accurately detail the full extent and effect of the policy.

The policy directive has been linked to around 15,000 deaths in the state, but the Cuomo administration has said it did not own up to the reality of the death count because of a fear it would be “used against us”.

“It’s been a fairly shocking decline for Andrew Cuomo,” Ms Nielsen said.

She said the two crises together are really “threatening to end his career” only months after being lauded for his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Senior Democrats even at a federal level are saying … that Cuomo needs to step aside”.

“It’s a pretty extraordinary turn around in a single year to go from the hero of the pandemic, to now looking like he could lose his job.”
