CSE's pathbreaking study on food safety revealed widescale adulteration in honey. It tested 13 different brands and found that only three honey brands to be unadulterated. More than 77% of the samples failed the test. These included big brands like Dabur, Patanjali, Apis, Hitkari, Zandu, and Baidyanath.
The big brands passed the tests in India but failed during the tests done using NMR in Germany. A few smaller brands were also tested, and most of them failed to pass the tests done in India. The CSE study also revealed that manufacturers in China and India were making advanced sugar and rice syrups that could bypass the Indian tests for honey.
