Should monuments to the Confederacy and other historical figures who had views on race that are today considered offensive by many continue to stand? In this video, I address the subject of Confederate monuments, and respond to many different anti-monument arguments from the channel Atun-Shei films. I take the position that these monuments should continue to stand, as should the many other monuments of past American historical figures. Many of the arguments put forward in the attempt to remove monuments focus on racism, slavery, "white supremacy", segregation, Jim Crow, etc. Those points are all addressed here.

The Civil War was fought between 1861 and 1865 when many Southern states, uniting as the Confederate States of America, attempted to declare their independence from the United States Federal Government. The states included South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

After the Confederates seized the federal outpost of Fort Sumter in South Carolina, the US Federal Government launched an invasion of the South. With the ensuing war, hundreds of thousands died or were wounded on both sides. Many famous American figures distinguished themselves during the war with their leadership, including Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Stonewall Jackson, William Sherman, and others. The conflict eventually ended with the caused them to capitulate and be re-integrated back into the United States.

Music used at the end of the video - Ashokan Farewell from The Civil War, a documentary by Ken Burns.
