‘Daily horrors are happening there’: dark side of jail where Trump surrendered

Millions of people around the world watched on Thursday as former president Donald Trump surrendered to the Fulton County jail, and then promptly left the building on $200,000 bond. Local activists and attorneys say it’s a starkly different experience from what the more than 1,500 inmates who are booked into the facility each month typically face in the overcrowded jail, which has been the subject of ongoing reports of horrific conditions and has seen a spate of recent deaths.

Along with 18 co-defendants, Trump was indicted last week on racketeering charges related to his alleged efforts to overturn the Georgia presidential election results in 2020.

How Taxes and Regulations are Worsening Vancouver’s Housing Crisis

Bernie Burnett is not sure how much longer she can afford to stay in her modest two-storey house near Jericho Beach, in a once-middleclass neighbourhood in Vancouver’s West Point Grey not far from UBC. As house prices in the city climbed relentlessly, her annual property taxes have soared eightfold – from less than $3,000 when she bought the house in 2001 to more than $24,000 last year. Although Burnett rents out part of the house, she has had to defer a portion of her property taxes for seven years. She now owes the city more than $150,000.

Downtown San Francisco's collapse reflects the city's decay

San Francisco’s downward spiral is continuing as it becomes clear that the city has dug itself far too deep a hole to get out of anytime soon.

Nordstrom is the latest company to call it quits in downtown San Francisco, announcing that its five-floor location at the Westfield Mall and its discount outlet, Nordstrom Rack, will be shutting down in the summer once the stores’ leases expire. According to the department store company, “the dynamics of the downtown San Francisco market have changed dramatically over the past several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our stores and our ability to operate successfully.”

How Decades Of Democratic Rule Ruined Some Of Our Finest Cities

Urban Blight: A few days ago, filmmaker Michael Moore tweeted, “Flint has voted for Dems for 84 straight yrs” and wanted to know, “What did it get us?” He’s actually on to something.

Don’t drink the water in Flint, Mich. Federal and state officials botched a water supply switch there and ended up contaminating the city’s drinking water with lead. It’s a sad and infuriating story that has gone on far too long. It’s not quite a humanitarian crisis -- blessedly, we don’t see many of those in this country -- but it is a mess.

It’s reasonable to call Trudeau a modern-day socialist

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, alongside other national and provincial leaders, can rightly be called a “socialist” in the modern sense.
