Belgian riot police clashed with a large crowd in Brussels’ Bois de la Cambre park after thousands of revellers gathered for an unauthorised event on Thursday. Four people have been arrested.
Officers used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds while some people were seen throwing objects and smashing police vehicles' windows.
The ‘La Boum’ festival was advertised on Facebook and promised over 100 DJs but police had warned it was a fake event on April Fool’s Day.
Nevertheless, up to 2,000 people showed up to attend, according to the police.
Belgium has seen a rise in hospitalisations due to Covid-19 in recent weeks despite tough restrictions, including curfews and mandatory mask-wearing outdoors, which have been in place across the country since November.
