It’s not uncommon for young people to want to fly the nest. Indeed, many choose to spread their wings and travel to far-flung corners of the world. Something, or someone, often draws them back home in the end, though.

And the story of 22-year-old George Pike is a case in point. He had decided that traveling the world was exactly what he wanted to do; as a result, he decided to leave his younger brother and dad behind in order to fulfill his dream of adventure.

Initially, his plan entailed spending a couple of years abroad, so that he could see as many sights as possible. He wanted to visit many parts of Australia, for instance, including Adelaide and Sydney. However, things were about to change.

That’s because, although heading overseas was what Pike truly desired, he knew that going away wouldn’t be easy for either him or his family. What’s more, shortly before Pike was due to leave, his 70-year-old dad had undergone surgery to replace a hip. It was natural, then, that Pike would worry about the effect of the operation on his father.

Nevertheless, Pike was sure that his dad would soldier on and eventually be back to his normal self. So off he went. Still, throughout his journey – and no matter where in the world he was – Pike ensured that he kept in contact with his family. This included Skyping his father at regular intervals.

Indeed, not only did he keep his family updated, but he made sure that the internet knew of his adventures, too. To facilitate this, Pike set up a channel on YouTube. Here, he documented his exploits for all to see and racked up thousands of views in the process.

However, on the other side of the world, Pike’s dad had developed a minor infection. He had picked this up shortly after his operation. And as a result, it soon became clear to Pike that he needed to get back to his father’s side.
