Soviet siege of Budapest Dec 1944-Feb 1945 - Background - The siege was part of the Budapest Offensive, which was a strategic victory for the Allies. The Soviets targeted Budapest because it was the capital of a country that could potentially ally with the Allies, and because of its industrial facilities and bridges over the Danube.
Fighting The siege was a fierce battle for control of every building and block in the city. The Soviets and Romanians encircled Budapest, and the Germans and Hungarians defended the city. Conditions: The city was cut off from food, electricity, gas, and water. Casualties: The siege was one of the bloodiest city sieges of World War II, with about 38,000 civilians dying from starvation, military action, and mass executions. Surrender: Budapest surrendered unconditionally on February 13, 1945, and the Soviets captured the city. Some say that the siege of Budapest was so terrible that it was "nothing akin to it has ever been experienced in Western Europe".
