Tens of thousands affected by floods in Sudan
(7 Aug 2020) LEAD IN:
Tens of thousands of Sudanese are struggling with floods caused by seasonal torrential rains, and hundreds are left displaced.
STORY-LINE:
Seasonal torrential rains have wreaked havoc on houses and infrastructure across Sudan.
More than 50,000 people are affected, according to the United Nations.
Of Sudan's 18 provinces,14 have experienced flooding in recent days, according to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan.
"We struggled with rescuing our families and taking them outside, we started carrying the children outside," Khartoum resident Eiz Al-Deen Ahmed said.
Last week, heavy rains caused the collapse of the Bout Dam in the Blue Nile province, destroying 1,200 houses and leaving at least five people dead across the country.
"We could not save any of our belongings. We only took our children out. I do not have anything," said Aysha Yahya, who is now displaced because of the floods.
The Sudanese government and humanitarian agencies are monitoring the situation and providing assistance to those affected.
"We provided the emergency work and set up the tents to the west of Zalat (the main street), and came up with an evacuation plan, we evacuated all families," civil defense officer Mohammed Hassan said.
Last year, flooding killed a total of 78 people in 16 Sudanese provinces, between July and August, according to the U.N.
