The Sig 716 Gen 2 will cure any of the quirks of this reviewed Gen 1. Either way this SAPR is pretty excellent. In testing we liked the Sig 716; it reminded us and shot almost identically to the also-tested H&K MR762 .308 rifle. Though it is a tank at 10 lbs+, there are certain POUs like team rifle where that heft is beneficial (discussed). Accuracy was top notch as was reliability even with steel cased ammo. Gen 1 vs Gen 2 716 differences are shown. Sig may change muzzle devices and furniture will different iterations. Competitive options are briefly discussed. Recommended.
Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 3.5 out of 5 for Gen 1, perhaps more for Gen 2

There is SO much confusion around the Sig 516 and 716 generations and iterations within each generation.
Specifically around muzzle devices, foregrips, pistol grips, stocks, sights OR optics and gas blocks each one was supposed to wear.
It seems Sig put their finger in the air on what to include on each iteration every other month and didn’t publish their results. This created confusion and strained confidence among existing owners which is a real shame. I’ve been a big fan of SIG for a while but they don’t do themselves any favors with the way they roll products out before they are finalized then they have to recall them or they decide to keep changing them without known rhyme or reason. One can reference the M17/P320, P365 MCX and various variants of the Sig 556, 516, 716. Now Sig has entered the direct impingement driven(Not piston) 716 Tread model into the mix which Further confuses people. At least in the AR-15 range they call their di guns the M400, which are also great guns, especially the higher end versions.
Having said that, I’ve got several 1st gen 516s in various configurations from basic patrol to full carbon fiber competition models and I’ve also got a 716 Patrol with awesomely ergonomic and lightweight B5 furniture and they are all fantastic.
The Lancer Carbon forearm rails lighten these guns up substantially along with the excellent B5 stock and it allows the 1st Gen 716 to come in around the 8.5 pound range.
These guns are super reliable in my experience in dirty, windy, dusty environments as well as brutal arctic temps.
Great review again Nutn!
Your added elements into the review are fantastic. I love the various props and stories that go along with them.
