The Met Police have shut down an anti-coronavirus restrictions protest in central London because crowds "did not comply" with social distancing rules.

Several thousand people attended the "we do not consent" rally in Trafalgar Square, with no social distancing measures in place and few masks worn.

As police officers moved in to disperse the crowd water and bottles were thrown at them by demonstrators - with some chanting "pick your side".

Police removed sound equipment and used batons against protesters, leaving some with visible injuries. Several protesters were led away in handcuffs.

Conspiracy theorist David Icke was one of the organisers of the event, encouraging people to attend on his Twitter account.

In a statement, the Met said: "Crowds in Trafalgar Square have not complied with the conditions of their risk assessment and are putting people in danger of transmitting the virus.
