Using my Howa Alpine Mountain rifle in 308 win. I compare 2 premium hunting rounds. Both make this little mountain gun 1000 yard capable. Both advertise very low minimum working fps. for expansion. 1500 for the Barnes and 1300 for the Accubond LR. Both rounds shot 1 MOA or better so I set out to prove the claims and try and capture a round in the wet magazines. After a good range zero, I loaded 10 rounds of each. I hit the tote several times, but magazines only being 8 1/2 in. tall it was harder than expected to actually capture the rounds. We were successful and captured both the Barnes 168 gr. ttsx and the Nosler 168 gr Accubond LR. Both loads grouped and fly at 2650. Oddly the Accubond takes exactly 1 gr. more of Varget to get the same speed as the Barnes, but the Barnes takes a plus 1 MOA at 700 yards.. In all both are very capable and add legs to the Howa Alpine Mountain Rifle. Which should I choose for this years hunts?
