How do you deal with grief? How do you comfort those who are grieving? Grief can make us question everything—our existence, our identity, even our path in life. You may feel abandoned, alone, powerless, pointless, forgotten, condemned, unmoored, or even nothing at all. How do you ignite hope when you’re in the midst of grief?

Ally Isom shares how connection with Deity, with your true self, with your family and friends, and with your community can spark hope. Ally experienced the death of her 21-year-old daughter. The accompanying grief was like a cold, predatory darkness that was all-encompassing. Ally pled with God, “I know you have watched your children suffer and die. I need you to tell me how to navigate this darkness of grief.”

Little by little, Ally felt bits of inspiration from God and came up with four ways to navigate her grief. She believes everyone needs inspiration from God in grief, but these principles may help:

Seek light.
Be gentle with yourself.
Watch for symbols.
Serve others.

These principles are about connection: connection with God, with yourself, with your loved ones, and with others. People who experience trauma and then seek connection demonstrate greater grit and resilience. Watch and learn why these principles made all the difference for Ally.

With connection, you can feel hopeful. You are not abandoned. You are not alone.

How do you navigate grief?
