My son build his own computer which uses a Linux operating system and it uses all open-source Linux based software. It's bare bones, no frills. But there ARE a lot of free and open-source programs out there to do many of the things, as well as competitors to Microsoft, Adobe, and all the big tech firms. I use free, open-source GIMP to create all my artwork instead of Photoshop. And you can use Open Office or other programs to act as your word processor. I have a disconnected "dumb" laptop with all my Adobe stuff on there because they moved to their "adobe cloud" service and I paid megabucks for the Adobe suite, they stopped supporting it even though it works just fine, and then Microsoft kept ramming updates that broke Adobe. Rather than pay $50 a month, it was cheaper to sacrifice a laptop, remove the modem, and do what I have to do with Adobe, and then put it on a flash drive and move it back to my regular desktop to upload. There ARE alternatives. We need to find them, and then send Mircosoft and Adobe the way of the dinosaur.
