Making Some Home Made Bore Cleaning Solvent - Actually Works
I was running low on my bore cleaning solvent so I decided to mix up some more. The recipe is for "Ed's Red" which is a somewhat well known recipe for home made bore cleaning solvent. I've personally been using it on my guns for the last 5 years or longer. It is inexpensive and works well enough for me.
Ed's Red Recipe:
Equal parts
1. Acetone
2. ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid)
3. Mineral Spirits
4. K1 (1K) Kerosene

Hi,
I use a similar formula. 1 part ATF(Automatic Transmission Fluid), 1 part Mineral Spirits (if you use the odorless variety it make it pinkish instead of red), 1 part light oil (any penetrating oil, 3 in 1 oil, just not cooking oil). I tend to leave out the Acetone simply because of its ability to damage some plastics. The acetone does help in removing carbon deposits on firearms that have not been regularly cleaned.
A friend uses a citrus based cleaner (I think Goo-Gone) instead of the Mineral Spirits. He claims it works a little better, but I am not sure since I have not tried that yet.
Thanks for the video and information.
