On Monday, December 19, the winter-type atmospheric pressure pattern has strengthened and strong cold air is flowing in the sky, causing heavy snowfall on the Sea of Japan side.
Especially around Niigata Prefecture, it is snowing heavily, and the snowfall in Nagaoka City has reached 83 cm. In addition, snowfall was 70 cm in Kashiwazaki City, and 45 cm in Niitsu City.
Snow is falling intermittently along the mountains of Kanto-Koshin of snow accumulation and frozen road surfaces on traffic. Some highways are closed due to snow, such as roads and parts of the Kanetsu Expressway. Railways have also been affected.
According to local media, about 10,000 households in Niigata Prefecture were without power as of 10:00 am on the same day due to fallen trees and other factors.
In urban areas of Hokuriku, snowfall exceeds 10cm, and along the mountains in Hokuriku and the southern part of Tohoku, snowfall reaches 1m or more.
Local authorities advised residents in snowy areas to avoid unnecessary outings and to pay attention to weather and traffic information.
