Most woods in the right state of decay will make great Hand Drill Fireboards. Not too punky, nor too hard, usually, the perfect density will be accompanied by some spalting. Today, let's examine 8 boards that I cut from a piece of Tulip Poplar just yesterday.
Also, I'll be using a 15 1/2" Horseweed spindle with 3/8" and 1/2" diameters, a perfectly decayed Tulip Poplar fireboard, a leaf ember catch, a Mora Companion Stainless Steel knife, making a knife carved notch this time, and using Loblolly Pine Needles for the tinder bundle..
