Heavy rain brought to Texas by Hurricane Harvey raised the reservoir to critical levels and poured into the Addix Dam in Houston, state officials said. Engineers have previously started dumping water to prevent flooding of areas near the reservoir. However, on Tuesday, according to the head of the general director of flood relief, Jeff Liedner, the water rose above the maximum permissible level. In Houston over the past few days, a record amount of rainfall - 75 centimeters - has fallen, the city's roads have turned into rivers. In Texas, where more than 30,000 people have already fled their homes, US President Donald Trump arrived on Tuesday to assess the scale of the disaster. Trump may also visit another flood-affected state, Louisiana, the White House said earlier. Meteorologists predict that flooding in Texas caused by Hurricane Harvey will only intensify in the coming days. The continuous downpour lasted for three days and, according to the forecast, the rain will not stop in the near future. Houston authorities are preparing additional temporary shelters to accommodate flood victims. This was announced on Tuesday by the mayor of the city Sylvester Turner. According to a government decree, the Federal Emergency Management Agency must "as soon as possible" provide shelter and food for 10,000 people affected by floods in Houston and surrounding communities. The George Brown Convention Center in Houston, which has been converted into a temporary retreat, has a maximum capacity of 5,000. However, on Tuesday, about 9 thousand people were accommodated here. Houston authorities said they will soon provide the addresses of an additional temporary accommodation center for victims. An emergency evacuation was announced in Brazoria County, south of Houston, as the risk of waterlogging was highest. Hurricane Harvey, turned into a tropical hurricane, hit Louisiana. The state capital of New Orleans, hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, is also preparing for flooding. City Mayor Mitch Landrew asked residents to stay at home and stay away from roads.
