True piety begets in our hearts a filial affection for God as our most loving Father, and all those who represent Him. It makes us KNOW, love, reverence and obey the voice of God… “I know Mine, and Mine know Me.” Without filial piety it is difficult to know and hear the Good Shepherd! St. Ambrose says that piety or godliness is the foundation of all virtue (pietas virtutum omnium fundamentum). St. Paul teaches that “Godliness (pietas) is profitable to all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1Tim 4:8). Godliness (piety), therefore, is always seeking to make us LOOK UP. The world is constantly telling us to look around and down! In maintaining this most profitable verticality, true piety enables us to see all things with the eyes of God, acknowledging the truth as He sees it and knows it: “the acknowledging of the truth, which is according to godliness” (Titus 1:1). Unhesitating and fervent piety, then, is detached and ready to abandon its most cherished ideas and actions, even habitual behaviors, the moment it discovers them to be, in any way, out of harmony with what God has revealed and established in His Plan of Salvation.
