Greece's largest island of Crete was hit by a 5. 8-magnitude earthquake that killed one person and injured others, authorities said Monday morning. The quake forced people to flee their homes, schools and public buildings across the island. Damage was reported in several old buildings near the center of the eastern part of the island. The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure has announced that it has sent a team of civil engineers to assess the damage and provide assistance. The man died after the collapse of a small church in Arkalohori, about 30 km from the capital, Crete, in Heraklion, during a renovation, a police spokesman said. The church is even more divided. Nine people were injured in the quake, which destroyed most of the old, uninhabited buildings in Greater Arkalohori, civil defense officials said. However, many in Heraklin ran down the street.
