Classic Movie Scenes: Hombre ("we all die, it's just a question of when...")

(NOTE: CONTAINS SPOILER; I ADVISE YOU SEE THE ENTIRE MOVIE FROM START TO FINISH BEFORE SEEING THIS CLIP.)

Another of my classic movie scenes. This one is from the film Hombre (1967) starring Paul Newman, Diane Cilento, Fredric March, Martin Balsam, Frank Silvera, Barbara Rush and Richard Boone. This is a classic scene because it has the best quick draw gun fight ever filmed. Beyond that this scene, in which John Russell walks down to confront Cicero Grimes, a hard core cold blooded murderer and highwayman played brilliantly by Richard Boone (this may be Richard Boone's best performance ever), depicts an act of selfless courage and sacrifice that is intensely moving, awe inspiring and makes John Russell a great and classic movie hero. I consider this film a work of art (one of the few movies I have ever seen that is better written, screenplay by highly acclaimed writing team, Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank, Jr., than the original novel by Elmore Leonard) and one of the best westerns ever made. In this scene every performance is superb. Notice the small details, the sharpness of the knife, the facial expressions. Brilliant! At times the movie feels like a tragic play. It is a must see.
