They had good reason to fear the white man as they had been caught murdering ship crews that mistakenly stopped without marines or other means of defending from the natives and/or stupidly trusted they were of similar moral foundations.

Liberia, Haiti and South Africa have all devolved back into warlords, rape, murder and cannibalism despite having been educated to the contrary. In S. Africa they also have entire blocks exploding from lack of proper maintenance of even their sewers, and striking miners are dealt with rather effectively and conclusively, by simply shooting them. (Lots of other cheap workers from where they came.)
