Benchmade Rescue Hook 5: "2 oz Ripper" by Nutnfancy
It's quite possible this design makes obsolete the traditional rescue knife. Purpose built for emergency cutting of heavy cloth, webbing, leather, tactical nylon, and pretty much everything that will fit in the hook, the Model 5 of the Benchmade Rescue cutters is amazingly portable at just 2.2 ounces. And it small, taking up little room on your belt or LBE. Made of 440C steel, it is razor sharp and as Benchmade's videos show, it's quite capable of shearing apart all those materials with ease. Another bonus is the well-built MOLLE sheath that will lock into place nicely on your loadout. Both the sheath and cutter are simple and strong designs that work. The Rescue 7 is longer, polymer covered, and more comfortable in size but will take up a bit more room; in many ways I think the Rescue 5 with its tiny size is the best carry-along rescue cutter made (as of Sept 2008). I did find chamfering the interior of the grasping hole made in much more comfortable for ergonomics (no sharp edges after that). At this weight and its reasonable price, it really makes no sense to not have BM Rescue 5 close by. If you bust out a BM Rescue cutter when it's really needed I pretty guarantee you will be elevated to hero status. That's a lot of payback for just 2 ounces. Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 9 out of 10
*** Thanks to viewer "collk88" for giving me a heads up on the Benchmade Rescue cutters. I doubt this review would exist without him.
