The dwelling built high above water sources have been thought to be protection from enemies. Like giants in the pre flood world that would eat those who could be caught. lol. But, really, there were giants and they have left fossil remains.
I agree that it is very unlikely that those monks ((always a religious excuse)) were caving temples out of granite with their stick and stone tools. If mud flowed over the top of villages it could have settled in between the outer walls as the mud flowed into the dwellings. That would leave a heavy layer in the cone shape on top of the roofs.
Reminds me of Silly Sand. I can picture water and sand swirling around towers as it settles.
