TV7 Powers in Play - The Yom Kippur War - 50 Years On

Published on 30 Sep 2023 / In News and Politics

After one third of Israel’s years so far, the Yom Kippur War engulfed it in the worst crisis of all. Even today, that war’s generation recalls it, indeed lives it, as the most searing experience of its life.

A lot has happened globally, regionally and localy in the last 50 years, but some features seem to cling on, though at times in different forms. The Soviet Union is no longer there, but Russia is hostile to the world’s preeminent power, the United States. Alliances have shifted and several Arab nations made their peace with Israel, but others refuse to budge, backed by Iran which turned from friend to foe.

What are the enduring lessons of 1973? Are some of the lessons originally learned now as obsolete as the technology of the time?
