Ford and GM got together in building the transverse, four-gear, electronic servo computer run trans-axle.
Rebuild an inline automatic before rebuilding the more complicated transverse models... but that would be for fun, right?
The 4T65-E included a larger 258 mm torque converter and many other changes to improve reliability over the 4T60. It is able to handle vehicles up to 6500 lb (2948 kg) GVWR with up to 280 ft·lbf (380 N·m) of torque. Pulling a heavy boat is not recommended, but a light aluminum up to, say 15 HP should be fine.
Starting in mid year 2000 models, all 4T65-E models received an upgraded valve body. Starting in 2003 the internal electronics were changed, and ratcheting sprags for input and 3rd gear were added.
If you have one of these, it is best to put a bottle of Lucas ATF fluid thickener to buffer the hard shifts a bit better.
If you burn out the bands under 200,000 km then you need to learn to baby this type of tranny by accelerating lighter.
This tranny is typically the weak point of any vehicle possessing the 4T6X. besides the ABS systems.
