Reupload. The approach of rehabilitation and treatment rather than punishment for criminal offenders is nothing new. The case of psychotic depression shown here however, is disturbing and rather extreme. We see psychiatric interviews with a seriously unlikeable man who violently attacked his pregnant wife and baby. He is then presented as a model of successful psychiatric and pharmaceutical intervention, and the viewer is supposed to delight at the fact that he was back at home with his victim just months later (because of "elasticity in the law").
I would really like to find this man's name, as this is said to be a real case. The program aired in May of 1960, so I presume the crime would have occurred sometime in 1959 in the Montreal area.
Dr. Henry Durost features in this film and provides a good summary of what was then frontier psychiatry - the idea that mental illness has a biochemical and genetic basis. Go to 12:48 to skip creepy guy and hear Dr. Durost.
I reuploaded this film after stabilizing the picture. It was super jumpy before and I never even watched it fully because of it. It's better now but might still cause a minor headache.
