New Evolution Of Robot Makes Soldiers Obsolete

Military robots are autonomous robots or remote-controlled mobile robots designed for military applications, from transport to search & rescue and attack.

Some such systems are currently in use, and many are under development.



War is becoming more and more impersonalized. We have robot aircraft armed with bombs and missiles operated by people half a world away. Killing people has about as much reality and is as impersonal as playing a video game in an arcade. But remotely operated drones are nothing compared with what we will likely see in the years ahead. The Pentagon is investing heavily in robotic systems of all sorts and expects to have more robot soldiers on the battlefield than humans by 2025. Of course, the US is not alone in developing these weapon systems. China and Russia are also developing robotic systems that include a large number of weapon systems that can operate independently of human control or interaction. Other nations are sure to follow.

The US is developing what is dubbed the Advanced Targeting and Lethality Automated System (ATLAS) which will use artificial intelligence and machine learning to give ground-combat vehicles (tanks, etc.) autonomous targeting capabilities. In plain English the machines will be able to act independently without human oversight to acquire, identify, and engage (shoot and kill) targets at least three times faster than having a human in the equation allows.

This means a weapon system, such as a tank, will have the ability to fire on their own with no human present or performing oversight. The machines will decide who lives and who dies without intervention, raising important moral and ethical questions.

The development of autonomous drone weapons does not stop here. The Navy, for example, is developing autonomous aircraft, autonomous ships, and submarines of various kinds. Soon, the human soldier will be completely removed from the battlefield, and war, except for the innocent victims who are unfortunate enough to be in the way, will become abstract and remote. What happens when war becomes like a video game where men operate robot soldiers from afar and when your unit is destroyed you simply go and get a new one and start over, like rebooting a game.
