National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence: America and the New Innovation Race

On August 13, 2018, John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 established the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) as an independent Commission “to consider the methods and means necessary to advance the development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and associated technologies to comprehensively address the national security and defense needs of the United States.” Given how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the world around us, AI’s rapid advancement has potentially far-reaching consequences for international security.

In this exclusive event by the Renewing American Innovation Project, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) will provide the keynote address, and he will be introduced by CSIS president and CEO John Hamre. This will be followed by an in-depth discussion with NSCAI chair Eric Schmidt and commissioner Gilman Louie, moderated by CSIS senior adviser and former USPTO director Andrei Iancu. In this exciting talk, the commissioners will discuss the report and its findings in a timely and revealing session that will address how the United States can continue its technological leadership, and how it can prepare for the coming opportunities and upheavals posed by AI.
