The IMD has announced that the Southwest Monsoon has arrived in Kerala today (June 3, 2021). It was delayed by two days as the normal monsoon onset is supposed to be on June 1.
The northern part of the system passes through Kochi in Kerala and Palayamkottai in Tamil Nadu. The system has advanced into some parts of south Kerala, south Tamil Nadu, and the southwest Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is expected to cover the rest of the country by July 5. IMD declares the arrival of monsoons when 60% of the 14 rainfall monitoring stations report continuous rainfall of 2.5 mm for 48 hours. Rainfall distribution over Kerala remained fairly widespread during the past 48 hours. Westerly winds that bring monsoon have intensified in the lower levels with wind speed up to 20 knots. Cloud cover over the Kerala coast, Lakshadweep, and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea have increased. The rainfall during the monsoon was erratic in the past few years. This has led to a flood-and-drought cycle for many areas in the country.
