Lhasa-Berlin Correspondance

This letter was written as a part of the German mission to Tibet started in 1938. Himmler thought Tibet also contained Aryans and sent an expedition there. Possibly, it may also be to open a new theatre of war against whole of East Asia – India, Russia and China. Officially, it was to sample and profile all the living matter in Tibet. They entered and exited through Sikkim. During their return to Berlin, the Rinpoche, the then regent for Dalai Lama gave two letters, one addressed to Hitler and one to Himmler. And to Hitler, he presented a Lama’s dress and Tibetian Kangyur. The letter to Hitler is below. Note that the Rinpoche continually used the word King and not head of state/ruler/President and my guess is he believed Hitler’s name is Herr Hitler.

The German King, the Exalted Lord Hitler,

The regent of Tibet, Reting Hutuktu

Sent on the 18th day of the first month of the Earth-rabbit year.

“To Herr Hitler, the German king who has attained on the wide earth power. I am glad that you are well and your good deeds of success are crowned with success. Also, I am well and dedicate myself eagerly the affairs of the Buddhist religion, and the government. I have let in not only Sahib shepherd and his companions, who have now come the first German to Tibet without disabilities to Tibet and have been, in every sense of the word a friendly helper, but I cherish the desire, the existing friendly relations between our two residences intensify. I believe that you, exalted king, Herr Hitler, unanimously considered the matter with me this as early as significant, and not indifferent. Dedicated to being your care and will notify me of your wishes. As a gift I send in a separate package an exquisite silk sash (Khatag) Tibetan-style, a silver cup with lid and the red and white teacup and even a Tibetan Apso dog.

am 18. Tag des ersten Monats im Erde-Hasen-Jahr abgesandt.

»An Herrn Hitler, den deutschen König, der auf der breiten Erde Macht erlangt hat. Es freut mich, dass Ihr Euch wohl befindet und Eure guten Handlungen von Erfolg gekrönt sind. Auch ich befinde mich wohl und widme mich eifrig den Angelegenheiten der buddhistischen Religion und der Regierung. Ich habe nicht nur Sahib Schäfer und seine Begleiter, die jetzt als erste Deutsche nach Tibet gekommen sind, ohne Behinderung nach Tibet hineingelassen und bin ihnen im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes ein freundschaftlicher Helfer gewesen, vielmehr hege ich auch den Wunsch, die bisherigen freundschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen unseren beiden Residenzen zu intensivieren. Ich glaube, dass Ihr, erhabener König, Herr Hitler, in dieser Angelegenheit mit mir übereinstimmend dies wie früher für wesentlich und nicht für gleichgültig erachtet. Widmet Eurem Befinden Sorgfalt und benachrichtigt mich von Euren Wünschen. Als Gabe sende ich in gesondertem Paket eine vorzügliche Seidenschärpe (Khatag) tibetischer Art, einen silbernen Tassendeckel und Untersatz samt der weiß-roten Teetasse selbst und einen tibetischen Apso Hund.
