Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

Peace and prosperity to you, my child. I wrote with a zealous heart and with a noble cause of saving our people from the sad and dreadful depth of the Naraka. I have been noticing during my annual Monlam teachings that the number of people attending has reached an alarming rate of decrease. It saddens me. Despite the conscientious effort of my trusted followers in spreading the great teachings of Buddha, they were not successful in expanding the sphere of our beloved Faith.

I understand the changing times and the complexities of the modern world, very much different with the simple and quiet life of our Tibetan home. With understanding comes my enlightenment of employing the innovations and inventions of the modern world- Social Networking. During one of the many conversations with my friend Tenzin Tethong who is also the President of my foundation, we argued and investigated on the power of social networking among our young generation and how it could possibly help the dying struggle of broadening our audience and eventually, our followers.

My child, it is with a curious soul that led me to you. I was able to take a look at your technological innovation called Facebook, an astonishing contribution to our society’s communication and information processes. At first I find it very difficult and confusing however it is with great patience that I have come to a comfortable mastery of your unique discovery.

There are some areas of Facebook though that my faith and teachings come in conflict with. It is with utmost respect that I inquire on certain applications and games as you call it that I find both fascinating yet alarming. We are ardent supporters of peace in our faith. War is like a fire in the human community, one whose fuel is living beingswhich is why I was disturbed when someone invited me to Mafia Wars. I immediately refused.

Somebody asked me to play poker and Bingo and I was jolted with the idea. I was deeply offended when someone offered me a beer while I was merely going over the insightful status of my Facebook friends. Someone poked me and I do not know if I need to poke back since my faith dictates forgiveness and that we should shun from revenge.

And also my friend, I am concerned when someone invited me to Crime City. Since the divine time of Siddhartha, we uphold the principle of non-violence and I am very much concerned if a crime city really exists, if so, then our political and religious leaders have not provided the teachings needed to fulfill the eight fold paths of Buddhism- Right View, Right Intention, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration.

It is my great honour that the knowledge of social networking was shared to me. My observations are not to undermine the relevance of your creation but rather to measure its righteousness. For you to know the depth of a river one should not only stand along its banks and look over, one should take off his sandals and experience the depth of its current. And I did just that.
