France assassinated its father': French royalists mourn executed king Louis XVI
Royalists in Paris gathered to mourn French King Louis XVI’s execution, of which his supporters call an "assassination", 228 years ago on Thursday (January 21) morning.
The commemoration was held at Place de la Concorde on the same spot where the king was beheaded.
Royalist sympathizers and a descendant of King Charles X, Prince Charles-Emmanuel de Bourbon-Parme, laid down flowers, gave speeches and prayed in the king’s memory.
“I believe someone is really dead when everyone has forgotten them,” said Prince Charles-Emmanuel de Bourbon-Parme. “Today, you have a proof that Louis XVI is not forgotten, despite the passing of time, despite the virus.”
A mass in the deceased king’s memory was then held at noon in the basilica of Saint Denis, the final resting place of the kings and queens of France.
A few hundred believers and royalists took communion and praised the former king’s life and deeds. They then went down to the crypt where the royal remains are buried, along with those of other members of French royalty.
Louis XVI was beheaded by guillotine in Paris on January 21, 1793, after being overthrown and subsequently tried for high treason by the French revolutionary “Convention.” His wife, queen Marie-Antoinette suffered the same fate not long after, on October 16, 1793.
