Thunder, rain and hail have lashed the city as a severe thunderstorm hits Tamworth.

Residents in parts of the NSW northern tablelands are being told to batten down the hatches as a severe thunderstorm warning remains in place.

Trees are down, roofs are damaged and there's flooding to many businesses, including a childcare business in west Tamworth.
