St. Philip Neri often said, “the great thing is to become a saint.” This is the same as saying, the great thing is to do our duties of our state in life well. One of the approved prayers to our patron saints asks this very thing… “O my most loving Saint, behold me kneeling at thy feet, beseeching thee with all the affection of my heart to grant me thy special protection, particularly when in danger of offending God. O my dear and holy advocate, remember me before the throne of the most holy Trinity, and obtain for me from the infinite goodness of God, the virtues of humility, purity, obedience, and the grace to fulfill exactly the duties of my State. Amen.” His Majesty says, “And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away” (Matt 11:12). Suffereth violence, meaning heaven is not to be obtained by main force, but rather by using violence upon ourselves, by mortification and penance, and resisting our perverse inclinations. All this can be summed up simply: perform your duties well and the foundation for sanctity will be well established. God will then make good use of us as His awesome instruments to bring about momentous good so needed in the world …bringing glory to Him and to His Holy Church… and be numbered among those included in the Roman Martyrology: “and in other places, many other holy martyrs, confessors and holy virgins.” (Note that the duties of our state in life mentioned in this sermon can be downloaded from the Mission Materials Tab on this same website).
