Let’s be clear — Canada should not 'move past' oil and gas

Calgary’s newly elected mayor started on a controversial note this week, declaring a “climate emergency” is her top priority. Pressed on her claim, Mayor-elect Jyoti Gondek made positive comments about Calgary’s energy expertise, but also indicated it is time to “move past” oil and gas production. The comments are problematic not just for her city, but for Alberta and all of Canada.

4 downtown Calgary office buildings empty as vacancy rate climbs: report

A new report from Avison Young shows the economic downturn has caused more downtown offices in Calgary to sit empty, but experts believe the shift may not necessarily be a bad thing.

The report has revealed four buildings in the city’s downtown core now sit completely vacant and another five are mostly unfilled, which is unusual for Alberta’s largest city.

What is to be done about Calgary's downtown vacancies?

As a result of the downturn in the oil sector, council voted in 2019 to shift the tax burden away from struggling businesses and onto struggling homeowners.

There are 10 buildings downtown with at least 75% vacancy, with three of them entirely empty, the CBC reports.

Jonny Hehr of Gibbs Gates Architects is looking to repurpose one of these buildings as affordable housing, which he says in addition to putting an empty building to use can serve to bring vibrancy to downtown Calgary.

Nenshi urges Trudeau to ignore Albertans Equalization wishes

He is certainly not going quietly into the night.

Former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi is still offering his political advice — telling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to ignore Albertans’ referendum vote of Equalization and slamming Premier Jason Kenney for even holding it.

“Those referenda were ridiculous in every way. They are purely attempts by Premier Kenney to save his political skin by focusing on how evil the federal government is,” Nenshi told CTV.
