Covid-19 vaccines are safe during pregnancy and does not harm the Placenta, says a new study. The placenta is the first organ that forms during pregnancy when the rest of the foetus is still forming. The placenta provides oxygen and nutrients to the foetus and removes waste products from its blood. The study was conducted by researchers from Northwestern University in the US and was published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. The researchers took placentas from 84 vaccinated patients and 116 unvaccinated patients who delivered at Prentice Women's Hospital in Chicago. Then they examined the placentas after birth and found no evidence of injury. Most of the study patients received either Moderna or Pfizer vaccines (mRNA platform) during their third trimester - the final stage of fetal growth. An earlier study had found that the placentas of COVID-19 positive pregnant women showed evidence of injury. Also, pregnant women make antibodies after vaccination and successfully transfer them to their foetuses. India is not vaccinating its pregnant and lactating women, while countries like the US and Brazil allows such women from getting vaccinated.
