Canada's Indigenous Services minister Marc Miller spoke about the COVID-19 outbreak in Kashechewan First Nation calling it an "alarming situation" on Wednesday.

Miller says of the 232 active cases, the majority are children aged 12 and under, who are not yet eligible for a vaccine.

Miller spoke alongside associate deputy of Indigenous Services Valerie Gideon and Dr. Tom Wong, chief medical officer of health for Indigenous communities.

The situation has led to a complete lockdown of the community, while six people who are over 18 and weren’t vaccinated have also been airlifted out to Kingston, Ont., the chief confirmed Tuesday.

Miller confirmed that Canadian Armed Forces military rangers are on the ground and are assisting along with the Canadian Red Cross, who deployed 14 people to Kashechewan.
