The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as the biggest cause of death in India, says IHME
* (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation). COVID-19 overtook ischemic heart disease as the leading cause of death. It killed an average 4,800 people a day (April 26, 2021), or 33,460 persons a week. On February 22, COVID-19 was in the 26th position. It caused an average of 180 deaths per day, or 1,273 a week.

Other top causes of deaths in India were:

3rd Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
4th strokes
5th diarrhoeal diseases
6th neonatal disorders
7th lower respiratory infections
8th tuberculosis
9th diabetes mellitus
10th chronic liver diseases, including cirrhosis

The death rates in Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and Goa have worsened since April 12, 2021. All these states have witnessed a daily death rate of more than 8 per million. IHME recommends strict social distancing measures when the daily death rate crosses 8 per million.

These high death rates can be attributed to:

Lack of preparedness,
Poor state of health infrastructure
Lack of medical oxygen,
Lack of medicines
