A cloud burst was reported in the Binsar hill area of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand on May 4, 2021. Several shops and vehicles are reportedly buried under mud and debris. The State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) has started rescue operations. A cloudburst is a natural event that involves an extreme amount of precipitation in a short period of time. They can quickly release large amounts of water in a small area, which can cause floods. The Binsar incident has affected about eight PWD roads, says Mukesh Repaswal, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chamoli. Three Decentralised Treatment & Reuse and three water supply schemes have been damaged. The government is also compiling the damage to agriculture and horticulture. NTPC’s Tapovan project has been suspended due to a rise in the water level of the river, Rishiganga.
“The state government will ensure proper treatment of the injured and make arrangements for food and shelter for the homeless.” --- Tirath Singh Rawat, Chief Minister. On April 23, 2021, a glacier burst in Chamoli district killed at least 15. In February, flash floods in Chamoli district had left more than 12 dead.
