A moderate shallow earthquake was reported early evening in United states near San Francisco Bay Area, California. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday 28 June 2021 at 6:29 pm local time at a shallow depth of 6.6 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface.

The quake was initially rated a 4.2 but was downgraded to 4.0. A second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre which listed the quake at magnitude 4.0 as well.
