Amazon has raked in a record $4.1 billion in government subsidies

Corporate giant Amazon has amassed a record amount of corporate welfare in 2021 to bring its total to an astounding $4,148,000,000, according to the economic development watchdog Good Jobs First.

In 2021 alone, Amazon has netted $650 million in grants, tax exemptions, and other incentives from states and municipalities in 2021 — "its most lucrative year of perks yet," notes this commentary at Nasdaq.com, citing Good Jobs First data. And that's with three months left in the year.

Taxpayer Backlash Coming Over Billions In Amazon Subsidies

Taxpayer subsidies given to the retail and tech giant Amazon may spur a backlash against corporate welfare, according to media pundits.

The company is back in the news after changing its mind and telling New York politicians that they can keep up to $3 billion in subsidies and tax breaks they promised the firm if it would locate another headquarters in New York City. Also, Amazon didn’t pay any federal income taxes on profits of $11.2 billion in 2018, according to a report from the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy.

The Walmart Tax Subsidy

As Walmart prepares to implement its previously announced plan to hike wages to a minimum of $9 an hour in April, Americans for Tax Fairness has published a new report detailing how employee wage hikes to $9 in 2015 and to $10 in 2016 will still require large taxpayer subsidies to compensate for Walmart’s low wages.

In April 2014, ATF released a report estimating that Walmart benefits from $6.2 billion a year in taxpayer subsidies because it does not pay many employees a high enough wage, so they must rely on food stamps, Medicaid and six other taxpayer-funded programs to survive.

Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving proclamation

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

The First Americans: Ancient DNA Rewrites Settlement Story

A genetic analysis of a baby's remains dating back 11,500 years suggests that a previously unknown human population was among the first to settle in the Americas.

Scientists recovered the DNA from an infant — only a few weeks old when she died — buried at the Upward Sun River archaeological site in the interior of Alaska.
