For Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War was not merely a conflict between the North and the South, but a World War against the British Empire.

The issue was, and still is, whether the world should be dominated by the British system of free trade, slavery, poverty and destruction, or by the American system of protectionism, development of the population, industries and rising standards of living.
